For the Horror Inclined: 10 Halloween-Inspired Pieces for a Hauntingly Decorated Home

woman with skull

Just because it's Halloween doesn't mean you have to fill your home with cheesy decorations like bats and witches from the dollar store. It's much better to create a mood instead, treating your home like the set of a Hitchcock film and not an Eli Roth production (meaning, you don't need buckets of blood to get the job done). Sometimes all it takes is a few choice pieces, like a vintage typewriter and an old mirror, to create an subtle (yet eerie) ambiance. Last year we compiled a roundup of some great options and we decided to do it again, so check out our favorite picks for creating a luxurious Halloween mood for 2014.

Naturally Superior Twig Chandelier

Horror fans are going to love this $1,395 woodsy chandelier from Shades of Light, because not only does it remind us of the creepy stick sculptures in True Detective, it also makes us think of NBC's Hannibal and any number of other scary programs. Handmade from hickory branches and twigs, the six-light chandelier would look amazing hanging above a dining table, but if it's a pain to clean, don't blame us. Blame Woody Harrelson.

Early 19th Century Carved Mirror

Sure, in some settings, this mirror would be charming and cute, but for Halloween? Those little wood cherubs are not to be trusted. They look like they're ready to drag you into the glass and trap you there forever—we all saw Oculus and that evil mirror didn't even have creepy kids surrounding it. Selling for $1,850 through 1stdibs, the early 19th century mirror is from France and is in excellent condition with wear that is consistent with its age and use.

Truth in Shadows - Titan Agate Amethyst Geode Carved Crystal Skull Sculpture

This amethyst and agate geode scull from Skullis is so pretty that we would want it regardless of the time of year. Priced at $14,990, the crystal skull apparently "possesses the energy of the elements of air and spirit." We don't know if that's true, but it’s certainly great to look at. The one pictured above is the exact one for sale, so you will know precisely what you're getting.

Manzanita Candelabra

We love how easily branches can fit into any décor theme and this $99 candelabra from West Elm is no different. Use it as a centerpiece for the dining room table, paired with nine black candles, and you're done.

Pair of Antique Gothic Mythological Tiffany and Co. Bronze Beveled Mirrors

One mirror isn't enough, which is why you also need this pair of antique Gothic mythological Tiffany and Co. bronze beveled mirrors from 1stdibs. Not only are they super cool, but the $4,200 mirrors feature Satyr heads and have candle holders to really set the spooky mood. According to the seller, they're in pretty good condition and feature some ghosting and losses to the back of the mirrors, but have great verdigris patina on the frames.

19th Century French Empire Metal Daybed

Your living room is going to need some furniture to go with the Gothic vibe, and we love this 19th century French empire metal daybed from Restoration Hardware. With tons of fabric options (including the type of fabric), you could go dark with a black or charcoal, or utilize some contrast with other dark room accents and choose a white or natural color. Whichever route you go, this daybed could easily be fit in with whatever décor scheme you choose for Halloween. We especially love the industrial look to it, like the wheels and the cast iron scrollwork, and can easily imagine a modern-day Sweeney Todd reading up on close shaves on its cushion. Depending on which daybed you want, the price ranges from $1,695 to $2,460.

19th Century Apothecary Chest

19th Century Apothecary Chest

Selling for $1,549 on Chairish, this 19th century apothecary chest features 28 drawers and is all original, handmade in the 1800s, believed to be English, and was probably used by a coven of wiccans (okay, that last one is our guess). Though the company isn't positive on the type of wood used, they are pretty certain it is pine that has been stained dark brown. Of course, with something this old there is definitely some wear and tear, like scratches and chips, but that just adds to the overall appeal.

Vintage Apothecary Jars

And what's an apothecary chest without vintage apothecary jars? This 24-piece set from Nineteen Mercier costs $300 and features various sized bottles that were hand-blown. Each with its own label and stopper, you can use them for what they were originally intended or as little bud vases, but either way, they'll look fantastic sitting on the above chest.

1930s Industrial Steel Bar Cart

Of course, what is a home without a bar cart? What are you supposed to put your cocktails on? This $895 Restoration Hardware design inspired by factory carts from the 1930s looks like it could easily be in a horror film taking place in an insane asylum. Three shelves offer plenty of space for your spirits and barware, with large front wheels and smaller back wheels giving stability.

Smith Corona Typewriter

A vintage typewriter may not seem like a good fit at first, but it is once you start thinking about The Shining. For sale on Etsy by boxofhollyhocks for $175, this Smith Corona typewriter features a "cracked/repaired handle and frame," but seems to work just fine (though it does need a new ribbon and ribbon cartridge), so you should have no problem typing out "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" over and over again.
