You may know British designer Stephen Collins from his hosting gig on Bravo’s Property Envy, but the bon vivant is also an expert in Mid-Century architecture. His latest Palm Springs renovation project in Kings Point is on the market for $1.5 million, which is a record price for the 1960s development, where 44 modern homes were designed by architect William Krisel—he also designed Coachella Valley’s Ocotillo Lodge, Vista Las Palmas, Canyon View Estates and Racquet Club Estates. Collins calls the 2,900-square-foot space a “brand new 1969 character home,” having stripped it down to the frame before reimagining it as a clean, modern desert dream residence. After getting a private tour of the three-bedroom/bathroom home, we have to agree with the designer.

The bespoke remodel can be found at 900 E. Murray Canyon, featuring high-end systems, luxury finishes throughout, and mountain vista views from almost every room. Other details include terrazzo floors in the living, dining and kitchen areas, spray foam insulation for “vault-like” sound deadening and temperature control, 360-degree clerestory windows to flood the home with light, and electric window coverings for darkness. The open kitchen has waterfall quartz counters, Miele and Bosch appliances, and a Daikin ductless, dual-zone HVAC system.

Listed with Windermere Real Estate, the home is the second mid-century renovation for the well-traveled Collins, Palm Springs’ style authority for the city’s annual Modernism Week. He bought the home fully furnished—all the way down to the “family photographs and spectacles by the bed”—then stripped it of everything. “The most significant changes were made in the mechanicals of the home,” he says of the process which involved the removal of every inch of drywall and insulation so he could start with a blank canvas.

“The flow of the house needed to be altered to meet the requirements of a contemporary lifestyle appropriate for the 21st century. I decided it should be white with no colors on the walls except for the peacock-teal blue front door. I wanted to keep the focus on the exquisite architecture, its elegant and simple detailing, and the exceptional views.” Those details, by the way, include a custom bone-shaped dog bed that has been quality-tested by Collins’ four-legged best friend, Hector. Adorable.
