Audi's Flagship SQ7 TDI Packs Trick Diesel Tech

While its rivals have pursued the ideal blend of performance, versatility and luxury, Audi has never offered a performance version of its flagship crossover utility vehicle. That all changes, however, with the introduction of the new SQ7.

The first performance version of the Q7, the new model is powered (as you might have guessed) by a more powerful engine. But instead of gasoline power, Audi has harnessed the same type of diesel propulsion that has propelled it to a baker's dozen victories at the famously gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 4.0-liter V8 engine features two conventional turbochargers, and another electric one to make it something of a hybrid in similar fashion to sister-company Bugatti's new Chiron supercar. Audi even upgraded the electrical system to 48 volts to power it all, including the electromechanical suspension and four-wheel steering systems.

The bottom line is a solid 435 horsepower and an even more impressive 664 lb-ft of torque. With that much muscle on hand, the German automaker reports that the new SQ7 TDI will reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just 4.8 seconds. That makes it the perfect foil to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GLS63, Range Rover Sport SVR, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the like. Only where those rivals guzzle gasoline, the SQ7 sips diesel instead.

Confirmation is still forthcoming on if and when the SQ7 will be sold in North America. Based on the precedent of the smaller SQ5 (sold in Europe with a diesel and in America with gasoline power), and given the recent controversy regarding diesel engines produced by the Volkswagen Group, Audi could opt to leave the trick new diesel engine overseas. However, sources indicate that chances are good for the SQ7 to make the transatlantic journey under diesel power.
