With one of the world's most recognizable skylines, amazing restaurants, and dozens of unique must-see attractions that you won't find anywhere else on the planet, it is easy to see why Sydney is consistently one of the most popular destinations for travellers visiting Australia.

While you'll find enough things to do in Sydney to keep you entertained for weeks, it is possible to create a luxury weekend getaway that hits many of the high points while showing the city to its best advantage.

Take a cruise
The ideal way to begin your weekend tour of the city is aboard a Private Sydney Harbour Boat Cruise. You'll sail past the spectacular Opera House, wine in hand, and toast the start of your weekend against the backdrop of the incomparable Sydney skyline.

Next to the Harbour Bridge you'll find the historic Rocks area. This is one of Sydney's oldest and most charming neighbourhoods. You can book a private tour and end with a stroll through the Rock's many boutiques and art galleries, where you can arrange to take a piece of Sydney home with you.

Sample some of Australia's superb wine at Wine Odyssey Australia on Argyle Street in the Rocks. Come thirsty, though, as a wine tasting tour can include up to 44 different offerings.

Experience the beach culture
Sydney had a thriving beach culture. Indulge yourself with a half day of private surf lessons at one of Sydney's most famous beaches: Bondi Beach.

Bondi can become very crowded, though. So, if you prefer a quieter beach where you can swim or stretch out and relax, or stroll along the shore, you'll enjoy Balmoral Beach near Taronga Zoo. Tamarama is also less crowded and quite beautiful, but be aware that the strong riptide means that it's not the best choice if you plan to go swimming. Surfers love it, though.

Have a picnic
Hyde Park will provide a gorgeous backdrop for a romantic gourmet picnic. The park is an oasis of green right in the center of Sydney's central business district. The friendly people at the Sydney Picnic Company will cheerfully prepare a basket filled with delectable things like European cheeses, stuffed olives, artisanal bread and a charcuterie board. If you prefer, they will gladly deliver your basket to the place where you're staying. A quick search on Gumtree will yield several suitable nearby accommodation options.

One of the most charming ways to explore Darling Harbour and gorgeous Circular Quay is by private Sydney bicycle tour.

Other things to do
If you enjoy relaxing with a little window shopping, the Queen Victoria Building is home to some of the city's most exclusive upscale shops. It also happens to be a wonderful place to grab a bite to eat, as their food court is packed with exquisite high quality and diverse ethnic cuisines.

You can't visit Sydney without stopping by the Sydney Wildlife World and visiting some of Australia's unique wildlife. Take one of the 'Behind the Scenes VIP small group tours' and get a highly personal look at the adorable koalas while learning more about the fantastic creatures that call Australia home.

For a breathtakingly extraordinary experience, climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As you climb to the best views in the city, you'll enjoy an entertaining tour filled with history. The tour is a favorite with celebrities who visit, so you never know who you might end up next to.

If climbing a bridge seems like more than you care to handle, you can still take in the unbelievable views -- just book a seaplane flight over the Sydney Harbour. You won't soon forget the experience.
