Short Guide to the Barossa Gourmet Weekend

When?

The National Australia Bank sponsored Barossa Gourmet Weekend will take place on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 in 2012.

Where?

The Barossa Gourmet Weekend takes place throughout the Barossa Valley region of South Australia, in what is one of the world’s most famous wine producing regions. This gorgeous part of the state is just a stone’s throw from one of Australia’s up-and-coming cities, being less than an hour’s drive from Adelaide.

What?

Over two days, participating wineries play host to guests from around the region, the country and the world. Wineries host gourmet lunches and dinners accompanied by their finest wines, providing an incredible opportunity to sample the best local food and wine. Each event also hosts some local live musical talent, making this weekend one of the best of the year for food, wine and culture. A regional cooking school will also be part of the event, which will involve the participation of 27 wineries, some among the world’s most famous.

Getting there

You can experience the Barossa Gourmet Weekend as part of a Barossa Valley day tour or of your own accord, and both ways are sure to please. However, if you plan on sipping more than a couple of wines, do not drink and drive. There are also some great deals on mini-van rentals if you are visiting with your entire crew, providing you have someone willing to be the designated driver.

Cost?

The cost will depend on how many of the lunches and or dinners you choose to attend, though the minimum that it will set you back is $50 per adult, per event. Considering the food and wine are guaranteed to be world class, it is quite a small price to pay.

Why?

Only someone who hasn’t yet been to the Barossa Valley would ask why they should go, as this incredible part of Australia is one of the most beautiful and magical regions in the entire country. Apart from the Barossa’s natural beauty, this area is a gold mine if you like good food, wine or music, and even if you don’t, buying tickets for a friend who does may make the best gift ever.

Where to stay?

Being so close to Adelaide, you can easily stay in the city, and then go out to the Barossa for the day and come home for the night. However, the Barossa also has some wonderful accommodation options of its own, so it will all depend on what you are after and how early you are able to book. Obviously, the fussier you are, the earlier you should book, because a lot of people will be coming for this awesome festival and accommodation fills up quick.

Kids?

Your children are absolutely welcome to come with you for the Barossa Gourmet Weekend, with many wineries well organised to help keep the little ones amused.

If you haven’t been to South Australia before, there is no better excuse to come than for the Barossa Gourmet Weekend, because when a region famous for its food, wine and music throws a party like this, you’d be silly not to attend. Make at least one day this year amazing, and get on a day tour to the Barossa Gourmet Weekend in August.
