Designers Laura & Gracia Create Contemporary Jewelry for Trendsetters

Own It
BY : Marissa Stempien | 2014

While big baubles, gems and minimalistic pieces are in right now, we have to admit most of them look pretty indistinguishable covered in the same sparkles, colors and multi-strand chains. We want to stand out, be noticed, and a little “oh-my-gosh-where-did-you-get-that” can go a long way in assuring us of our sartorial stylings. Laura & Gracia is a contemporary line that creates raw jewelry with leather and reworked silver. Handcrafted in their Northern California studio, the two designers are committed to creating a line that is unique and rough—focusing more on artistic beauty than trends. One of our favorite pieces is the Obelisk Choker, a necklace that’s made using “an ancient European method of lost wax casting,” natural leather and Deerskin suede. The rest of their unisex collection consists of leather and silver worked into designs that blend caveman and rock’n’roll. And while the natural look works beautifully year round, it’s especially great on bare, tan skin in the summer.

One of our favorite things about fine jewelry—aside from the glitz and sparkle, of course—is to see the sheer amount of creativity that designers can put into such a little thing. While fashion is able to use the body as a canvas,...

ZZ Watches Are Taking The World By Storm With The Tornade and Cyclone Collections

Own It
BY : JustLuxe Team | 2014

Trying to get through eight days of Baselworld without buying a watch is like trying to get through Fashion Week without buying a wardrobe—virtually impossible. And after the event, when we start to pick and choose which timepieces we’re going to need for the next year, we always prefer to look at some of the newer brands. Every man with money can buy a Rolex or Patek Philippe, but having an eye for emerging brands takes a horological connoisseur. ZZ Watches, a new Swiss brand, was launched only a few months ago, but is capturing our attention due to their very unique, new collections—the Tornade and Cyclone.

In both watch styles the dial is made up of two windows, one for hour and the other for minutes, set slightly off-kilter from each other, in a figure-eight pattern designed to give an “an allusion to the vortex of tornados and the whirlwind of cyclones.” With two bridges crossing the watch face and hours and minutes encircling each dial, the front makes for an impressive statement, while the inner mechanics can be seen through the navy blue tinted glass. Coming in a rose gold or steel casing with available diamond options, these watches are engraved with the brand’s double Z logo on the watch crown and are water resistant up to 100 meters. Each collection is available in limited numbered editions of 888 pieces and is available exclusively at the Colette shop in Paris.

Monique Péan's Woolly Mammoth & Dinosaur Bone Necklace Is More Eco-Friendly Than You Might Think

Own It
BY : Marissa Stempien | 2014

We confess we have a weakness for all things gold, and feel much less guilty about stocking up on all those baubles when we splurge on eco-friendly and sustainable designs—so when we spotted this Monique Péan collared necklace we were basically in heaven. Made from fossilized woolly mammoth, fossilized woolly mammoth tooth root, gray fossilized dinosaur bone, 1.09 carats of white diamonds and 18 karat white gold, it sounds like an environmentalist’s nightmare; in actuality it’s probably one of the most eco-friendly, luxury jewelry pieces we’ve seen. Péan’s eponymous label is committed to social and environmental responsibility and uses 100 percent recycled gold as a base for all their jewelry. The fossilized bones are sourced from indigenous Alaskan Natives near the Arctic Circle using fair trade standards, while the diamonds are conflict and devastation free—only purchased in countries that are free from conflict and participate in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, a cooperative that monitors the import and export of diamonds and uses environmentally responsible mines. Which means we're going to be snapping up this collar ASAP. Besides, if it’s good for Mother Nature, it’s good for our wardrobe.
