The Battle Of The Online Beats | Pandora vs. Apple

internet radio
By: Annalisa Solaricomments 0 | 2012
Apple Inc. has been the “cool kid” of the technological world for years now, constantly coming out with merchandise that receives a cult-like following. The fact as to whether or not they are truly superior to other products on the market is seemingly insignificant. If the release of previous Apple goods is any indication of events to come, then Pandora Media Inc. should be concerned, because according to Bloomberg, Apple has increased talks with major music labels to start an advertising supported streaming-radio.

In order to compete with Pandora, Apple is looking to get licensing pacts with labels that allow more flexibility within what listeners hear, whereas current internet radio leader, Pandora, relies on a compulsory license that limits how often users can skip tracks and how many times an hour an artist can be played.

Apple is currently the world’s biggest music retailer with more than 400 million iTunes accounts and is planning on making music available to listeners for purchase as music streams live or by revisiting songs they have already heard in auto-generated playlists. Alongside that, Apple is also looking to create an app specifically tailored for its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Could what we've already seen only be the beginning of the Apple cult following? It certainly seems that way.

Apple Makes Your Tablet Obsolete With iPad Mini and iPad 4

ipad mini If you just bought Apple's iPad 3, you may be a bit irritated to find out that your shiny new luxury gadget is now outdated thanks to the iPad 4 and iPad Mini. The iPad 4 isn't really that different from the previous generation but we all have that little voice in our head that whispers to us, telling us how much shinier the new one is and how we need to keep up with technology. While the iPad 4 isn't much of a change, aside from the new A6X chip, which is also used in the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini may be something you want to add to your arsenal of luxury gadgets regardless as to whether you have the larger counterparts. According to Huffington Post, the Mini is measured at 7.9 inches from corner to corner and will be in direct competition with tablets from Amazon, Google, and Samsung. Apparently, as a way to show their superiority, Apple's senior VP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller even compared the Mini to the Nexus 7, pointing out all the ways Apple's tablet is better (like the superior app choices and lighter weight).

Nokia's Strange and Advanced Cell Phones

nokia cell phone People lost their minds for the new iPhone's release but the design seems pretty safe compared to some of the weird looks Nokia put into the world ten years ago. Long before Apple took over the cellular phone business, Nokia released one strange phone after another in attempts to keep up with customer demands. While they may be unattractive compared to today's super sleek designs, many of these were actually pretty advanced for the period. According to ZDNet, the Nokia 7600 was announced in 2003 and didn't even look like a phone at all with its teardrop shape. It consisted of one interface and looked like a sci-fi communicator meant to be strapped to your wrist. The entire design looks to be pretty awkward to handle and probably needed two hands despite the small size. The Nokia 5510 was released in late 2001 and is pretty clunky and oversized, looking more like a game console or television remote than a cell phone. It was supposed to be a music and multimedia device though and was even able to play MP3 songs while you texted your friends. The QWERTY-keyboard was definitely ahead of the game at the time and made it really easy to keep up with your buddies. Although, the super small monochrome screen probably made it tough to see what you were typing. They were even one of the first in the cell phone game to release a touchscreen phone, the Nokia 7710. Meant to be used in landscape mode, the phone looked a little more like an interactive tablet than a cell but it definitely impressed.

Bang & Olufsen's Satellite-Inspired BeoPlay A9 Speaker

Bang & Olufsen speaker
By: Mila Pantovichcomments 0 | 2012
Luxury electronic company Bang & Olufsen always stays a step ahead of the pack, releasing sleek and powerful speakers you can feel proud of owning. Their newest music offering (released under their sub-brand Play) is the BeoPlay A9 speaker. The slim design looks like a satellite dish and is apparently supposed to give a deep bass that isn't often experienced.

According to Super Yachts, the BeoPlay A9 has a 2.1-channel bass reflex loudspeaker system that includes five separate speakers and amplifiers. The volume control is touch-sensitive that can be muted simply by resting your hand on the speaker. Hopefully there's some sort of limitations around that because it could be irritating to have the music mute every time you shift the speaker's position. You can also control the settings via a smartphone or tablet, including track selection. Since it costs $2,699, it's not a speaker you want to buy lightly but it definitely seems like a great addition to a large open space.
