Danish architectural firm United Network Studio has completed a modern, minimalist residential space on the outskirts of Stuttgart, Germany. Commissioned by an undisclosed client, the luxury villa, penned The Haus am Weinberg, is designed to incorporate and utilize a central theme of movement, and also reflects the topography of the surrounding area.
The Haus am Weinberg is a single-family residence bordered by a rural terraced hillside and a suburban cityscape. UNStudio worked to mirror the duality of the terrain in the design of the house so that it integrates itself into the immediate landscape. The scales and inclinations of the hillside slopes are echoed in the graded exterior facade. Like the bank of a hill, the walls incline upwards to reveal a transparent double-height dining area. Eliminating darkness and making use of the vistas, UNStudio glasses in certain corners so that they “disappear” and provide the inhabitants gorgeous views from within, framing the landscape like a picture. For example, the dining area displays the rural views of the ancient vineyard.
The awareness of movement and structure is apparent in UNStudio’s architecture and this luxury home proves no exception. Not only does it emulate its natural setting, the house is constructed “by a single gesture” — the twist. The interior space is meant to be an extension of the twisting motion of the central staircase. Directing the main flow of the house, the lower staircase wall winds down into a rounded “drop,” and appears to have been poured into the floor. Employing this circular momentum, living areas are placed within the house to follow the path of the sun at peak activity times. “Each evolution in the twist leads to moments in which views to the outside become an integral experience of the interior.”
Haus am Weinberg’s layout takes advantage of natural sunlight and depending on the time of day, provides the owners with optimal organic light. This cuts energy consumption and lessens environmental impact. Views from the living room open to the nearby parklands to the South-West. On the second floor is the master bedroom and wellness area. Designed so that the sun can penetrate into the depths of the interior, the house integrates sunlight with activity, synergizing nature with mood. The interior is arranged into spaces of “varying atmosphere and spatial qualities” and natural oak flooring and white clay stucco walls are dotted with fragments of reflective stone to further enhance natural light. To spice things up a bit, the house includes a dark room dedicated to hunting and music.
