For those seeking to explore the history of the area, the Schiele Museum of Natural History is a must-see. Exhibits showcase the flora and fauna of North Carolina and across North America. A great stop for those with children, the museum holds special events, educational programs and creates its own publications to instill a sense of curiosity and environmental responsibility into kids.
The museum was founded in 1961 by veteran, scout and ranger Rudolph Melchoir Schiele who collected rocks, minerals and wildlife over the course of his lifetime. The current museum houses exhibit halls, a planetarium and research labs.
