Sip on Bodega Numanthia's 2013 Termanthia, the Jewel of Spanish Wine

Own It
BY : Vicki Arkoff | 2017

There are many excellent wines in the world, but fewer than you might think are truly exceptional. The jewel on the crown of Spain’s great Bodega Numanthia winery—founded in Argujilo-Zamora by the Eguren Family in 1998—is Termanthia, the esteemed vintner’s most precious and rare creation. It’s 100 percent Tinta del Toro, produced and bottled in Valdefinjas. The red grape variety—picked by hand and crushed by foot—forms the backbone of some of the absolute finest wines from Spain and Portugal.

The wine is aged twice in new, French oak barrels and is neither fined nor filtered. Termanthia is the ultimate expression of the best of vineyard plots in the Spanish Toro Region: 11.8 acres of Tinta del Toro vines that are more than 120 years old, located at an altitude of 2,625 feet. The sublime fruit concentration unveils a magnificent aromatic intensity that reveals as much intensity as it does precision and elegance. Each year, Termanthia receives better and better reviews, driving the price upwards which makes this year’s 2013 vintage release a wise investment as well as a premium bottle to enjoy. “If you have a soul,” says The Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker, “sell it to the Devil for a few bottles of this extraordinary liquid.”
