SIXTY Hotels, the cool new brand from the founders of Soho’s original boutique property 60 Thompson, is gearing up to be a major presence on the hip hotel scene with a brand new project in South Beach and some key renovations. SIXTY was founded by Jason Pomeranc and Stephen Brandman, who along with Pomeranc’s brothers Michael and Larry established Thompson Hotels in 2001.

In 2011 Thompson merged with Joie De Vivre Hotels to become Commune Hotels & Resorts, and last year the original Thompson team parted ways with Commune to launch SIXTY. With this, they retained and rebranded their four original properties: SIXTY SoHo (formerly 60 Thompson); SIXTY Lower East Side (formerly Thompson LES); SIXTY Beverly Hills (formerly Thompson Beverly Hills); and 6 Columbus - a SIXTY Hotel.

The brand also recently acquired the Continental Oceanfront South Beach Hotel built in 1950 for a price said to be (appropriately enough) about $60 million, and plans to turn it into their fifth hotel calling it Nautilus South Beach. Set to open by the end of the year, the Miami Herald reported that Nautilus will feature 29 suites and two penthouses, a lobby lounge, event space, pool bar and fitness center.

Chef Claude Troisgros will revive his Blue Door restaurant, formerly at the Delano, for the Nautilus as well. Meanwhile SIXTY Beverly Hills is getting a makeover with 12 new suites along with restyled rooms and a “rooftop surprise,” while the SIXTY LES will also see its rooftop space, Above Allen, get a refresh.
