The original home of the arts collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum until 1997, when the monumental Getty Center opened 13 miles away, the Getty Villa reopened in January 2006. After an extensive renovation, the Villa is now an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The Villa itself is as much of an attraction as its collection. The centerpiece of the 64-acre site was inspired by a first-century Roman country house once inhabited by Caesar's father-in-law, and the Outer Peristyle, with its 225-long reflecting pool, is a Los Angeles landmark. The Cafe serves casual Mediterranean fare with kid-friendly options and has both indoor and outdoor seating. The Villa offers family programs every weekend, with extra events planned in summer months, when the gardens are particularly irresistible
