San Diego’s historic Spreckels Theatre will be the venue to host the 2012-2013 season for the City Ballet of San Diego. This year also marks a significant anniversary for both the Spreckels Theatre as well as the San Diego dance company. Artistic Director Steven Wistrich said, “The Spreckels Theatre celebrates their 100th anniversary as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. We feel Spreckels Theatre is the perfect venue to showcase our beautiful dancers and stage our ballets. Spreckels Theatre is ideal for presenting dance and enjoying the exciting ballets we have planned for the upcoming season."
Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich, who both were former dancers in the Boston and Stuttgart Ballet, are known for their presentation of George Balanchine ballet. This season will include a San Diego premiere of one of Balanchine’s ballets, and will also open with the Emerald Jubilee in honor of the company’s 20th Emerald Anniversary. In addition, the season will also include George Balanchine’s "Emeralds" from his ballet Jewels as well as Balanchine’s Tarantella, a contemporary ballet by San Diego principal dancer Geoffrey Gonzalez, and Paquita.
The Christmas season will see the presentation of The Nutcracker, which has been honored with the Tommy Award “Best Nutcracker” in San Diego. March will see the performing of Giselle with music by Adolphe Adam performed by the City Ballet Orchestra, and finally the season will conclude in May with Elizabeth’s Wistrich’s Carmina Burana.
