You probably never imagined a Barbie this chic when you were a kid. While our favorite doll has been everything from a paleontologist to an astronaut (with a little modeling on the side), Barbie is getting a high fashion makeover by none other than Karl Lagerfeld. This fall, Mattel will release Lagerfeld Barbie, dressed in head-to-toe black, accessorized in chains, sunglasses, fingerless gloves and even the designer’s signature white hair. The announcement could be coming at the perfect time considering the financial state of Mattel, with shares dropping six percent this morning after the release of less-than-stellar second quarter reports.
But if anyone can save Barbie, Karl Lagerfeld can. For her 55th anniversary, she will be transformed into Lagerfeld as part of the Barbie Collector series which includes other noted collaborations with designers like Christian Louboutin, Christian Dior, Versace, Oscar de la Renta and Hervé Léger. "It's not every day that Barbie dresses like the world's most famous fashion designer," commented Kim Culmone, global vice president of Barbie product design.
Details including price and availability will be released at a later date, but we’re hoping accessories will include a mini Fendi Karlito keychain and Choupette with real sound effects.
