Opened in November 1819, the Museo Nacional del Prado now has more than 2,300 paintings in its collection. In addition to an impressive number or painted masterpieces, the museum's collection also includes a large number of sculptures, prints, drawings and other works of art.
Today, the museum's full collection consists of approximately 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 3,000 drawings and 6,400 prints, plus a large number of objects of decorative arts and historical documents. The the museum exhibits more than 1,300 works, while nearly 3,100 works are temporarily on loan to various museums and institutions, and the rest is kept in warehouses.
